Yesterday: Streymoy, Tjørnuvik to Kirkjubøur
Started with a visit to Saksun and hike to the ocean inlet. Picnic lunch at Saksun, then drive the east coast to Tjørnuvik. Then back to the apartment for a nap. Headed south then to see the mediaeval church and cathedral at Kirkjubøur before the planned five course home-cooked dinner nearby. Big day. Got home…

On the Faroe Islands OK
Car hire took a little longer than expected, because somehow I had lost the extra hour of time zone, so we actually arrived at 1:30PM, instead of the 2:30PM that it would have been had we still been in Copenhagen. The car was booked for 3PM, so we had to wait a bit… There are…

Made it to Copenhagen
The flight from Brisbane to Hong Kong was a real eye-opener. Going to be tough to go back to flying steerage long haul. Flat-bed sleeper class is totally worth it. The other advantage of splurging on the ticket class was that it got us into the Qantas lounge in Hong Kong, which was nice, for…

On the move, in Brisbane
Notes for beginners: Yes, it is a good idea to take a couple of extra days of leave before flying. Finishing up a work project on Friday leaves you too tired to pack on Friday night, so all of the packing is left until Saturday morning. Regular file server maintenance does have risks, if following…

20 August – Iricahua Trail and Yarapa River – raffia creatures and bats
The forest hike on the Iricahua Trail was pleasant enough, but a bit meh. Could have spent my time better with a sleep in. I think Cath did. There was a departure briefing: off the boat at the crack of dawn tomorrow. Went into a market that had more of the raffia creatures that had…

19 August – Hoatzins and Capybaras
Breakfast at the “Hoatzin Picnic Café”. Cabin staff demonstrated how they made the towel animals. In the afternoon we went swiming in the Yanayacu Lagoon with piranha fingerlings and dolphins. Some claimed that the fish nipped, some claimed that they had a nice manicure – I didn’t feel a thing. On the way back to…

18 August: Llanalpa and Dorado River – Piranha and Cayman
Forest hike in Llanalpa trail (did I skip that for a sleep-in?) Steamed off for the Dorado River. Had a cooking class by the ship’s chef: preparation of the local dish “juanes”, which was a mixture of rice and spices with a peeled, boiled egg, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed (or perhaps baked,…

17 August: Amazonas Community and Clavero Lake
Skiff ride along Marañon river. Visit Amazonas community vilage, with demonstrations of cane sugar crushing and local cuisine. Met some school children, who sang us a song. Learned to make Pisco sours. Saw the merging of the Marañon and Ucayali rivers, where the Amazon is formed. In the afternoon we went on another skiff ride…
