Got out at the same sort of time as yesterday: about ten-ish, and went to the good coffee shop for coffee and breakfast.
Next door to the coffee shop is a hat-and-gloves shop, and we’d left my street gloves at home and Cath wanted a beanie that was warmer than the light ones that she’d brought, so we went in to look for those. Got both. My new gloves are “conductive” and so can operate a mobile phone without taking them off. Apart from the fingerprint ID thing. Still, comfortable and useful. Cath’s new beanie is like a grey version of my dark blue one: warm and comfortable. We both also came away with peak caps, for times that an over-ear beanie is too much. Successful mission. Dropped the purchases back at the hotel before setting off on the sight-seeing mission.
Today we wanted to stop at a department store on the way back to the Rotes Rathaus, this time to go around behind it to the Nikolaikirche area, supposedly full of restored medieval buildings. The church was fine, but the area wasn’t especially medieval. Made the mistake of stopping in to a restaurant for a snack and finding ourselves in front of a main course and a pint of beer each. A bit much for the occasion, and that took the edge off our evening plans, which involved eating at the “Thursday street-food” market at Markthalle Neun. Came back to the hotel to let the excess lunch settle while we rested up for the evening excursion.
The street-food event was really great. Very vibrant, well attended and lots of interesting food from all points of the globe. We ate some Tibetan dumplings (like enormous gyoza) and some Turkish “manti”, which are like meat-filled dumpling/raviolis served with yogurt, chili and paprika. Both were delicious, but filled us up before we could get on to the Korean bao or the soup dumplings or the Bavarian mac-and-cheese or … We did stop for a couple of glasses of “natural” wine, which all of the hipsters seem to be into. Also very nice.
Home again by bus and subway: the public transport really is excellent.
