The first full day at Abisko the weather was lovely. After a leisurely breakfast (and the writing of the previous post) we rugged ourselves up to go for a walk down to the lake (about 15 minutes if you were in a hurry, but we weren’t). First we walked up the hill behind the lodge to see what was to be seen and to take some photos of the spectacular “dawn” light over the mountains to the South (towards Kiruna). Just enough cloud showed up to make the effect very memorable.
Then we moseyed down towards the lake, making one wrong turn (forgetting where the pedestrian underpass road went) that required a bit of snowy trudging to rectify. The lake and shore were much as we remembered it from the last time we were here. Quite a bit less ice on the water. Seemingly more light: probably because the sky was so clear. Snow-covered jetties and boats on trailers.
Went back to the lodge for the afternoon and then dinner. After dinner the sky was still (mostly) clear, so we geared-up again, this time with our wide-angle lenses and tripods and headed back to the lake to look for aurora. And yay! They came! The photos have turned out pretty nicely, but these were really not especially strong aurora: they were thin and grey to the naked eye: the green only came up with the aid of 8-second exposures. Still, there’s another check-box ticked.
